Hughenden & the Flinders Shire are home to 4 National Parks: Porcupine Gorge; White Mountains; Moorrinya; and Blackbraes; in addition there is the nature reserve at Kooroorinya.

Dinosaurs & Fossils

Hughenden is situated on the edge of a vast pre-historic inland sea, once home to many terrestrial dinosaurs as well as marine reptiles, making this area well known as ‘dinosaur country'

Hughenden is situated on the Overlanders Way from Townsville to Tennant Creek as well as Australia's Dinosaur Trail encompassing the towns of Richmond and Winton. There are also several byways and 4WD trails for you to enjoy.

Apex Driver Reviver Park (Other)

Located on the Flinders Highway travelling west, this park is where Driver Reviver is operated during some public holidays and school holidays.    

Basalt Byway (Facility) - Business:07 47412970

Departs on the Torver Valley Rd, looping back to Hughenden on the Old Richmond Rd.  This 4WD track winds between the landscapes nth of Hughenden, running for 95km.  

Blackbraes National Park (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located 170km north of Hughenden on the Kennedy Developmental Road.  Ranges surrounded by basalt outcrops, basalt plains and seasonal swamps.       

Brodie Street Park (Other)

Located in Brodie Street opposite the Police Station, this park is a great spot for travelling families wanting to burn some energy.

Bully Playford Park (Other)

Located on the Flinders Highway travelling east, the Bully Playford Park is dedicated to one of Hughenden’s long time Rotary Club members.   

Cemetery Arts and Symbolism Self Guided Tour (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located at the Hughenden Cemetery, Richmond Hill Drive.  Take this self guided tour (available from the Flinders Discovery Centre) around the Hughenden Cemetery which has history dating back to 1886.      

Discovery Park (Other)

Located between the Flinders Discovery Centre and Flinders Shire Public Library, this walkway connects the Centre to the central business area.  

Eco Walk on Flinders (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located on Little Avenue, Hughenden. The 1.5km walk displays the Bio Regions in the Flinders Shire. 

Eromanga Sea Byway (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Departs Hughenden on the Muttaburra Road before heading east to connect with the Prairie – Muttaburra Road.  Total length of the Byway is 202km.     

Federation Rotunda (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located in Brodie Street, Hughenden.  This Rotunda built in 2001 has been made from 20' windmills 

Flinders Discovery Centre (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located at 37 Gray Street, Hughenden.  This accredited Visitor Information Centre houses a fantastic Dinosaur Display and Museum with something for everyone.

Flinders River Byway (Facility)

A 4WD Byway which connects the Flinders Highway (west of Prairie) with the Kennedy Development Road (north of Hughenden) crossing the Flinders River.  Travels on the Glentor-Prairie Road, total length of the Byway is 32km. 

Hebrew Grave (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located behind Richmond Hill Drive on the road to Waste Plant.  This area is where the Cemetery was previous located and where only the grave of Jeanette Tolano still lays today.

Historical Coolabah Tree (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located in Stansfield Street, over the causeway near the Hughenden Showgrounds.  This coolabah tree is of immense historical important as it is linked to two relief expeditions searching for Burke and Wills.     

Hughenden Bowls Club (Other) - Business:0747411219

Located on Little Avenue with an eight rink synthetic carpet facility with licensed clubhouse.  

Hughenden Golf Club (Other) - Business:0747411195

Located off the Kennedy Developmental Road (North) on Golf Course Road, this Club is an 18 hole, par 70 course.  

Hughenden Memorial Aquatic Centre (Other) - Business:0747411885

Located in Resolution Street, this Aquatic Centre offers patrons a 33m swimming pool and children's pool. 

Hughenden Skate Park (Other)

Located on Resolution Street, next to the Hughenden Memorial Pool.  This Skate Park has a shaded skate area and picnic table.   

Kooroorinya Falls Nature Reserve (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located 54km south of Prairie on the Prairie-Muttaburra Road, Kooroorinya Falls Nature Reserve provides an oasis in the Desert Uplands. 

Moorrinya National Park (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located 90km south of Torrens Creek.  Moorrinya was once working sheep station, however now protects over 18 land types and various flora and fauna. 

Mount Walker (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located 10km south of Hughenden on the Muttaburra Road with a sealed access to the top of the tabletop mountain.  A perfect spot to enjoy sunset or sunrise and a must for the eager photographer.

Located at the intersection of Stansfield and Gray Streets.  Mutt the full bodied Muttaburrasaurus replica provides a great photo opportunity for young and old alike!

Located 74km north of Hughenden on the Kennedy Development Road.  Road is fully sealed and camping available by pre-booking only.  Experience what is dubbed Australia’s Little Grand Canyon!

Prairie Park (Other)

Located in the centre of Prairie on the Flinders Highway, this town park was created by the Hughenden Lions Club.  

Returned Soldiers' Memorial Rotunda (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located on Gray Street, across from the Hardware Store, the Returned Soldiers’ Memorial Rotunda was erected in 1932.

Riverview Park (Other)

Located on the right hand side before the Ernest Henry Bridge travelling north, this basic park offers travellers and shaded grassed area and picnic tables.  

Robert Gray Memorial Park (Other)

Located on the northern banks of the Flinders River, this park is dedicated to the local characters and pioneers of the district.

Located in various locations, call into the Flinders Discovery Centre for a detailed map of locations.  As visitors are exploring Hughenden’s streets and parks they will be given the chance to view the impressive sculptural pieces made and designed by local artists.  

The Flinders River (Facility)

Located at the northern end of Gray Street, visitors will find the Flinders River – Queensland’s longest river.

Torrens Creek Park (Other)

Located in the centre of Torrens Creek on the Flinders Highway, this park offers the traveller picnic tables and toilet.

Located 107km east of Hughenden, this park is spectacular white sandstone bluffs and gorges, wildflowers and diverse ecosystems make this park very unique and appeals to experienced bushwalkers and self sufficient campers. 

Wirrila Mill - 35 Foot Comet Windmill (Facility) - Business:0747412970

Located on the southern side of the Ernest Henry Bridge overlooking the Flinders River, this Comet Windmill is one of only 15 35 foot mills manufactured.
