Set amongst the wide-open landscapes of Outback Queensland, Hughenden packs prehistoric discoveries, local characters, delicious meals, and one seriously impressive gorge into an easy two-day stay.
So park up the car or caravan, slow things down, and take a weekend to explore Hughenden for yourself. Here’s how to spend 48 hours in Hughenden.
Day 1: Dinosaurs, local flavours and a taste of Hughenden
Morning: Arrive, caffeinate and explore
Every good road trip should begin with coffee. Make your first stop Golden Lab Espresso – a much-loved coffee spot among locals and visitors alike. From there, head into town to the Hughenden Visitor Information Centre, where you can find out what’s happening around town, pick up local information and get some firsthand advice before you start exploring. Conveniently, you’ll also find one of Hughenden’s must-see attractions here – the Flinders Discovery Centre.
Allow plenty of time to explore the town’s prehistoric past, and meet Hughie – the life-sized skeletal replica of a seven-metre Muttaburrasaurus. The region’s fossil history makes Hughenden an important part of Australia’s dinosaur story, and the centre is an ideal introduction to the landscape that you’ll explore over the next two days.
Lunchtime: Eat local at The Nest
After a morning spent getting to know the town, make your way to The Nest on Brodie, one of the newer additions to Hughenden’s growing local food scene.
Located along Brodie Street in the heart of Hughenden, The Nest is a great spot to slow down, refuel and enjoy lunch before spending the afternoon exploring at your own pace.
Part of the joy of giving Hughenden more than a quick stopover is having time for places like this. Rather than watching the town disappear through your rear-view mirror, grab a table, support a local business and experience a little more of everyday life in Hughenden. From here, spend the afternoon wandering through the town, discovering local shops and streetscapes, seeing the famous Comet windmill next to the riverbank, or simply taking things a little slower after your time on the road.
That’s the best part of visiting Hughenden over a few days rather than merely passing through – you have time to experience the whole place.
Settle in for an Outback night
As afternoon turns to evening, settle yourself in before heading up to The Great Western Hotel for dinner.
Then, look up.
Away from the bright lights of Australia’s major cities, an Outback evening offers a very different view overhead. For an even clearer view of the night sky, head away from the town lights to the Driver Reviver area, a local spot for taking in the stars. At the Driver Reviver, turn down the side road, and look out for the pull-in on the right.
Not sure where to go? Have a chat with the team at the Flinders Discovery Centre during your visit earlier in the day. They can point you towards a suitable stargazing spot and share their local knowledge before you head out.
Take some time to enjoy the stillness, watch the stars overhead and soak up the slower pace of an Outback evening. Then, get some rest, because tomorrow you’re heading somewhere spectacular.
Day 2: Discover Porcupine Gorge
Make an early start on day two for one of the region’s natural highlights: Porcupine Gorge National Park.
Located around 60 kilometres north of Hughenden, allow approximately an hour for the drive and take your time along the way. Check current road and park conditions before setting out, particularly if you’re travelling after wet weather.
Porcupine Gorge has been carved through layers of sandstone over millions of years. From above, you’ll get spectacular views across the gorge, but if you’re ready to stretch your legs, you can experience it from below too.
The Pyramid Track descends from the camping area into the gorge, where you’ll reach the impressive Pyramid rock formation and surrounding creek. Allow approximately 30 minutes for the walk down and around 40–60 minutes for the climb back up, depending on your fitness level, conditions and how often you stop.
Remember: what goes down must come back up! The return walk involves a steep climb, so allow plenty of time, take it at your own pace and consider your fitness and the conditions before setting out.
Prefer to stay above the gorge? The Rim Walk is another great option. This relatively easy, 30-minute walk each way leaves from the Pyramid camping area and takes you to a different lookout, giving you another perspective over the surrounding landscape without descending into the gorge.
If you’re looking for an even easier way to take in the scenery, you don’t need to tackle a longer walk at all. The main lookout offers a fantastic way to appreciate the scale of Porcupine Gorge without the descent.
What to bring
For your Porcupine Gorge day trip, come prepared with plenty of drinking water, sun protection, a hat, comfortable enclosed walking shoes and snacks or lunch. If you fancy a swim at the bottom of the gorge, don’t forget your swimmers as well.
Phone reception can be limited once you’re outside town, so it’s also worth downloading anything you need before leaving Hughenden.
And, of course, bring your camera. You’ll want it.
Why stop for two days? A Queensland road trip isn’t only about reaching the final destination.
